Beneficial Whitefly ParasiteEncarsia formosa Target pest: Whitefly Smaller than the head of a pin the Encarsia feeds only on whitefly and is both a predator and a parasite in that the adult female will eat the young whitefly and lay it's eggs inside the whitefly larvae. The female will lay between 100 to 200 eggs, reproducing faster than the whitefly. Works well with Ladybugs and Green Lacewing and are not attracted to Sticky Yellow Traps. After the adult female lays it's eggs the young will emerge in about 20 days. In greenhouse applications use Sticky Yellow Traps for monitoring. Release 2-5 Encarsia per plant when whitefly is first noticed, if whitefly population is high use insectidal soap to get numbers under control wwhen waiting for the Encarsia to arrive. Re-release every 10 to 14 days 3 to 4 times for total control. Check the underside of leaves for the spherical, scale like larvae, magnification may be needed as they are almost translucent at this stage. Once the larvae has been parasitized they will appear black in color, snip these leaves and scatter through out the greenhouse as an adult Encarsia will emerge in about 20 days. Comes as mature pupae in host eggs glued to a small card that hangs from infested plants.
